Protein Bagels

Protein bagels – plant-based

There’s something deeply grounding about baking. The act of mixing, shaping, and creating food from scratch feels like a quiet conversation with yourself — a reminder to slow down and nourish your body with intention.

At Food for the Soul, I believe that food should do more than simply fill us up. It should support our energy, honor our values, and make us feel good — physically and emotionally. That’s why I’m so passionate about healthful eating, especially when it’s balanced, protein-rich, and made with real, thoughtful ingredients.

What About Protein and why it matters

One of the questions I hear most often about plant-based eating is: “But where do you get your protein?”

The truth is, protein is everywhere in plants — when we choose intentionally.

Protein is essential for feeling strong, satisfied, and energized throughout the day. It supports muscle repair, keeps blood sugar stable, and helps us stay full longer. And when you’re eating plant based, being mindful about protein isn’t about restriction — it’s about balance.

That’s where high-protein baking comes in.

Protein plays a key role in:

  • Muscle repair and strength
  • Hormone balance
  • Stable blood sugar
  • Feeling full and satisfied after meals

Depending on the protein powder you use these bagels are approximately 11- 13 grams of protein per bagel!!

Baking That Actually Nourishes

Traditional bagels are comforting. They are nostalgic and delicious. Yet, they’re often made with refined flours that leave us hungry soon after. I wanted to create a bagel that still feels cozy and familiar, but also truly nourishes.

These high-protein vegan bagels are made with:

  • Quinoa flour for full plant protein
  • Almond flour and seeds for healthy fats and minerals
  • Flax and psyllium for fiber and gut support
  • Unflavored plant protein to boost protein without overpowering flavor
  • They have no white sugar or processed oils

The result is a bagel that’s hearty and satisfying. It is supportive. This makes it perfect for a slow morning breakfast. It also works well for post-workout fuel.

A hearty and healthy plant based protein rich bagel that is nourishing

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Organic Quinoa flour
  • 1/4 cup Organic Almond flour
  • 1/2 cup unflavored plant protein powder
  • 3 tbsp flax meal
  • 1 1/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp date sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 heaped tbsp psyllium husk
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • About 2 cups room temperature water
  • sesame seeds ( approx 6 tsps)

Directions

1. Combine the dry ingredients. Turn the oven on to 325 degrees F. Combine quinoa flour, almond flour, protein powder, flax, baking powder, baking soda, salt, date sugar, salt

2. Soak the psyllium husk. Soak the psyllium husk in water and vinegar and let it sit for 5 mins

3. Mix the wet and dry. In a mixing bowl, combine the wet and dry ingredients and mix lightly until everything come together. It will be loose and sticky. Don’t worry.

4. Form the bagels. On a silicone lined baking tray, place 1/2 tsp sesame seeds on 6 spaces where you will put the bagels. With wet hands form light dough balls and place on top of the sesame seeds. Wet hands again and gently pull the dough balls to shape into bagel shapes. Sprinkle with more sesame seeds.

5. Bake. Bake at 325 F for about 45 – 50 mins.

Food With Intention

For me, healthy plant based eating isn’t about perfection. It’s about listening to your body, choosing ingredients that serve you, and finding joy in the process. These bagels are a reflection of that philosophy — simple, nourishing, and made with care.

They’re proof that plant-based food can be:

  • Comforting
  • Protein-rich
  • Wholesome
  • And deeply satisfying

I hope this recipe inspires you to rethink what baking can be — not just a treat, but a form of self-care.

Let’s bake something that feeds the soul 🤍
